Difference Segmental and Suprasegmental Features
Phoneme is sound,
and sound can separate or not, is divided into two: segmental and
suprasegmental. Spelling is a depiction regulation or figuratively speech
sounds of a language. Because the sound is speech two elements, which segmental and suprasegmental, spelling also
depict or symbolize both the sound elements.
Segmental is phonemes that can be separated. Segmental
sound refers to the notion sounds that can be segmented / separated. Segmental
is not only how to symbolize the speech sounds in written form or letter, but
also how to write the sounds told in the form of words, phrases, clauses and
sentences, how to chop off syllables, how to write abbreviations,
people's names, symbols etc. For example, when we say "Library", then
the sound, can be divided into three syllables: li-brar-y /ˈlaɪ.brər.i/. Or divided into smaller again so be: l-i-b-r-a-r-y.
While suprasegmental is something that accompanies the phonemic that it
could be the sound pressure (intonation), long-short (pitch), duration and the
sound vibrations that indicate certain
emotions. Suprasegmentals are often regarded as the
"musical" aspects of speech. Suprasegmentals are important for making
all kinds of meanings, in particular speakers' attitudes or stances to what
they are saying.
