Introduction to Literature

I actually don’t understand what is literature? Why did I choose this course? The reason is because, I love English language so much. My parents advised me to choose English education majors. But I said that I was not ready to be a teacher. And reasoned that when I learn English, watch movies, listen to music I'm happy, so I think I better choose English literature. But after nearly three months as a student of literature, it turns out that all is not as easy as I thought. I'm just having love reading novels, watching movies, and liked the music, at first I thought studying in this majors will given a lot limited task of reading novels, either modern or classic novels, and watch movies, actually not. There are so many tasks that I never had before. One of the new lessons to me is the Introduction to Literature. In this course I got a lot of new knowledge. At first I thought the material that taught will be the same as the Indonesian Language in my Vocational High School that is the analysis of the elements of intrinsic and extrinsic a literary work, it didn’t. One material that I get is to analyze a short story, in analyzing a short story is one element of the plot. But on this course, analyzing the plot of a short story is not granted, but there are parts like the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. Of course there are many elements in analyzing literature that I never learned. Such the materials will not I get on other courses, of course I can search that elements in Internet, but I wouldn’t understand it if it isn’t explained. The conclusion is, as long as I studied this course, I can understand and learn more about human problems and difficulties, common of such problems and ways to overcome them, and make myself to be better human beings. As a student of English literature, I will try to learn more so that I become successful, can share my knowledge to other people and being a good writer. Thanks a lot to Mrs. Anjar Dwi Astuti, M.Hum.
